Children at Your Wedding Abroad: Entertainment That Works

From kids' clubs to quiet corners, here's how to keep young guests happy at your destination wedding without losing the romance.

A wedding abroad with children in the mix brings a particular kind of joy — flower girls racing barefoot across a terrace, small cousins meeting for the first time, a toddler asleep on a grandparent's shoulder during the speeches. It also brings a practical question most couples ask us early on: what do we actually do with them for the rest of the day? Think about the whole day, not just the ceremony Children generally manage beautifully through a short ceremony, especially one with a sea view or something to watch. It's the hours either side — the drinks reception, the long dinner, the gap while photographs are taken — where attention tends to wander. The couples who find this easiest aren't the ones who've booked the most elaborate entertainment; they're the ones who've thought through the shape of the day from a child's point of view and planned around the natural lulls. A good starting point is simply asking how many children are coming, and their ages. A wedding with four toddlers needs a different approach to one with a dozen eight-to-twelve-year-olds who'd happily entertain themselves given half a chance and a pool. On-site entertainers and kids' clubs Many of the venues we work with across Zakynthos, Cyprus and mainland Greece have the space — and often the existing relationships — to bring in a dedicated entertainer or small supervised activity area for the afternoon. This might be face painting and simple crafts for younger children, or a treasure hunt around the grounds for the slightly older ones. In Italy and Spain, where weddings often run at villas or masserie with generous outdoor space, a roaming entertainer who can shift between quiet table activities during dinner and something livelier once the dancing starts tends to work well. If your venue has a pool, this is often the simplest entertainment of all — but it does mean agreeing supervision arrangements in advance rather than assuming someone will keep an eye. We'll talk this through with you when we're planning the day, because it affects timings, insurance considerations and sometimes the choice of venue itself. A quiet room matters more than people expect Alongside the organised fun, it's worth setting aside a quiet space — even a small side room with cushions, a few books and a fan — where overtired children (and occasionally overtired adults) can retreat. Late afternoon heat in Cyprus or Zakynthos in high summer catches people out, and a cool, dim room with no expectations attached is often more appreciated than another activity. We've seen this single, unglamorous detail do more for a smooth evening than almost anything else. Involving children in the day itself Some of the nicest moments come from giving children a small, genuine role rather than simply entertaining them around the edges. Scattering petals, carrying rings, handing out something small as guests arrive — these jobs give shy children a sense of purpose and give confident ones a moment to shine. For the reception, a children's table with its own menu, colouring sheets and perhaps a small gift bag goes a long way, and most of our venue partners are entirely used to catering for younger palates alongside the main menu. Babysitting and evening cover For the evening, particularly once dinner moves into speeches and dancing, many parents prefer a qualified babysitter or two rather than a group activity — someone who can take tired children back to their room or a quiet lounge area while parents stay at the party a little longer. In Dubai and across our Spanish and Italian venues, reputable local babysitting services are usually available through the hotel or resort, and we can arrange this as part of the wider planning so it's one less thing for you to organise in the weeks before the wedding. Why this is easier with planning support Every destination has its own practicalities here — availability of entertainers, local babysitting standards, what a particular venue can and can't accommodate — and these are exactly the sort of details that are hard to judge from a brochure photograph. This is where full planning support earns its keep: we know which of our venues in Zakynthos, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Dubai and Spain genuinely work well for children, which have shaded space for an afternoon lull, and which have entertainers or babysitting services we'd happily recommend again. In Cyprus specifically, where our packages run from £6,899 to £10,899, couples are often pleasantly surprised at how much thoughtful family provision — kids' activities, accommodation for grandparents, the quiet-room detail — can be built in without the day losing any of its elegance. Getting the balance right The weddings that feel most relaxed with children present aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest entertainment budget. They're the ones where someone has thought, in advance, about where the tired three-year-old will go at four o'clock, and who's briefed to look after her. Get that right, and everyone — children included — tends to remember the day for all the right reasons.
